Library Board of Trustees
The Hull Library Board of Trustees are a group of citizen volunteers appointed by the Hull Select Board to serve as liaisons between the Library Director and the Town Manager. A vital link between the library and the community, trustees are library advocates and leaders who serve willingly, responsibly and creatively for all members of the public. Each trustee brings to the board skills, talents and personal experience which uniquely serve the library, and together their diverse viewpoints help to assure that the library will serve the total community. Successful trusteeship creates a working relationship with the community, library staff and fellow trustees, and takes their responsibilities as public officials beyond board meetings. An effective trustee is one who participates intelligently in the entire political process: understanding municipal finance, local budgetary pressures, personnel concerns, and the administrative practices of the municipality as a whole. They recognize that the library is not an island, but part of a larger municipal structure, and strive to build stronger partnerships within the community it serves.
A Library Board member is accountable to the taxpayers, the residents of the community and others served by the library. Specific duties include attending and participating in all board meetings, reading board meeting minutes and other materials sent out before the board meeting, and becoming informed about all phases of library operation. A trustee serves on committees as assigned by board Chair, lends expertise and leadership to the board for the good of the library, actively participates in activities and workshops, and visits the library often. Appreciation of the library, a desire to provide the best possible library service for the community, and a willingness to be a team player are essential qualifications.
