Historical Commission

The Hull Historical Commission provides for the preservation, protection and development of the historic and archaeological assets of Hull. It is responsible for community-wide preservation planning and is an advocate for historic preservation in Hull, including working for historic preservation in planning and development of the community.

In accomplishing this mission, the Commission:

  • Creates and maintains an inventory of historic assets, including houses, barns, commercial buildings, cemeteries, military sites and artifacts, monuments and markers, railroad artifacts, landscapes, and more;
  • Seeks to protect the town’s historic assets from neglect, deterioration from the elements, development, inappropriate uses, etc; and
  • Provides educational opportunities to increase public understanding of the history of the town and the historic context of important assets.

We work with other Town boards, committees, commissions and officials to fulfill our mission. The Historical Commission is NOT the same as the Hull Historic District Commission (HDC) or the Hull Historical Society, though we work cooperatively and share many goals related to the town’s historic character. If your questions pertain to changes to or the appearance of a residence, building, or other structure within out historic district, you should contact the HDC.

Some of our current and planned initiatives include:

  • The Historical Commission has a voting representative on the Community Preservation Committee and reviews all projects
  • Fort Revere tower and bunkers preservation and re-use, National Register of Historic Places and in Hull Historic District
  • Town owned historic buildings preservation and potential re-use, including Municipal Building [Town Hall], First Town Hall and Library in the Historic District, A Street Fire Station, Electric Light Building, USCG Boathouse at Hull Gut, National Register Hull Lifesaving Museum etc.
  • Coordination  with the Historic District Commission and Fort Revere Park and Preservation Society as well as Massachusetts Historical Commission, and DCR for Peddocks Island
  • Catalog holdings of the Hull Historical Society collection of  early 1900s postcards of historic buildings and sites
  • Interpretive signage for historic sites such as the library and Paragon/Fascination site
  • Ongoing recruiting of commission members and volunteers and community outreach for initiatives
