Can I launch a chinese sky lantern?

Sky lanterns, also known as Chinese lanterns, have become very popular. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Generally constructed of paper, a wire frame and a small candle used to create heat and cause the lantern to rise into the air, like a hot air balloon. The lantern stays air borne only as long as the flame stays alight, after which the lantern sinks back to the ground. Depending on the model they can stay in the air for over thirty minutes and reach heights of 800 meters Most are made from rice paper and are extremely flammable. Some are made with fire retardant materials and are 100% biodegradable. They are being marketed for a variety of celebrations as a way to “ensure your event is unforgettable”.

However; there is an inherent danger to setting something on fire and letting the wind carry it where it may. Sky lanterns can start a fire when they return to the earth. If ignited on a windy day they may not gain any altitude before blowing into something else, setting it a blaze. Also if there is an airport nearby, lanterns could find their way into an aircraft’s flight path.

At present there is no state law explicitly addressing the use of these devices. They are neither permitted nor prohibited. However the law does allow the chief of his/her community the right to abate any condition he/she feels is likely to cause a fire. With that understanding, the use of these devices is prohibited. Fire department personnel will consider them hazard to the public’s safety and take the appropriate action.
