After receiving calls from the public about health concerns due to excessive flies on N. Nantasket Beach, the Board of Health and Conservation department investigated the state of seaweed and flies on Nantasket Beach (specifically near the F St beach area). The Health Dept. has determined that the seaweed and fly situation is not a health hazard at this time. The abundance of flies on the beach may be a nuisance and are a typical of the spring and early summer season. This level of seaweed is not considered excessive. The abundance of flies appears to be occurring along most of Hull’s shore (observed also at the bayside A St ramp) probably reflecting a broader regional issue (fly season) rather than the presence of seaweed on the beach. We realize that there may be more of a fly nuisance in some areas than other areas. Bagging seaweed and/or raking into piles seems to actually increase the density of flies in that immediate area and possibly prolonging the length and intensity of this nuisance. Allowing the seaweed to dry out and let nature takes its course is recommended. We will continue to monitor the seaweed levels. The Board of Health is responsible for assessing, maintaining and protecting the health of the Town of Hull. Duties include the enforcement of Massachusetts General Laws and the promulgation of new regulations and policies pertaining to the public health.

The following applications for permits are reviewed and processed through the office of the Board of Health. Inspections are conducted in accordance with the State Sanitary Code and the Town of Hull By-Laws.
