Water Safety Checklist

  • If you have or live near a swimming pool, has four-sided pool fencing with self locking and self closing gates been installed Fencing should completely isolate the pool.
  • Is pool fencing at least five feet high?
  • Are you careful not to prop the gate open or disable the latch or gate?
  • Do you keep a cordless, water resistant telephone in the pool area with emergency numbers posted nearby?
  • Is poolside rescue equipment kept close to the pool area?
  • Do adults practice constant supervision around any body of water?
  • Have you learned and practiced the basic lifesaving techniques, including First Aid and CPR?
  • Are CPR instructions posted near the pool area?
  • Have you enrolled non-swimmers in swimming lessons taught by a qualified instructor? Remember that regardless of skill level, young children should never be left unsupervised?
  • Are you careful not to allow young children and non-swimmers to use rafts and inflatable toys that could easily deflate?
  • Are all pool toys and rafts securely stored when the pool is not in use?
  • Have you cleared debris, clutter and pool toys from the pool deck and adjoining pathways?
  • Do you use plastic glasses and plates around the pool area?
  • Are pool chemicals used and stored according to the manufacturer's guidelines?
  • Do you keep pool chemicals in a dry place away from other items and heat sources?
  • Do you lock all pool chemicals in a secure cabinet out of children's reach?
