Statement Regarding Water System

The Weir River Water System, owned by the Town of Hingham, was notified on Wednesday that Veolia North America, its third-party water management company, experienced an apparent ransomware attack on its internal, back-end systems. Veolia has informed the Town that there is no indication that the attack affected any operational or control systems. Further, Weir River’s water operations are independently isolated from all outside systems.

Veolia, which operates 8,500 water and wastewater facilities around the world and currently serves over 550 communities in North America, notified its client facilities, including Weir River, of the incident.

Russell Tierney, Weir River’s Managing Director/Superintendent said, “Veolia let us know that it is working with external cybersecurity experts who are experienced with these situations, and it is working with appropriate law enforcement agencies to assist in the investigation of this incident. As a precautionary measure, Veolia has taken some of its internal systems offline for repair.  During this repair period the Weir River Water System has temporarily suspended the link on its website to the Veolia billing system.  Veolia will continue to update their client companies as more information becomes available. We at Weir River will keep our customers informed as well.”
