STUDENT COURSE EXPECTATIONS
2011-2012

Technology Grade 8                                                              
Course Objectives
        
First term 8th grade students will concentrate on learning Microsoft Excel, second term students will review MS Word and MS PowerPoint. With a structured curriculum that maps directly to Microsoft e-learning; students will participate with teacher instruction, a skills assessment; e-learning; classroom training labs; and other reference materials enabling them with a more powerful use of Microsoft technology. Through the use of an on-line keyboarding website, students will continue to learn to touch type at home.  All Memorial School Students that haveTechnology have 15 minutes of Keyboarding Homework each school night.
Parent should sign their child's agenda book each week stating that their son/daughter completed their technology homework.
Hull High School is a Microsoft Office Specialist test center.

Course Objectives
·Students will demonstrate the ability to utilize a keyboard using the touch method.
·Students will demonstrate written communication skills through the proper use of spelling, capitalization, punctuation; number expression and word usage
·Students will apply basic formatting techniques.
·Students will demonstrate proficiency in proofreading
·Students will demonstrate information processing skills through the application of document formatting techniques
·Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills by composing documents at the keyboard
·Students will demonstrate proficiency in MS Word, Power Point, and Excel software

Course Content
·Identify parts of equipment, i.e., monitor, keyboard, CPU, and printer
·Identify and utilize keyboard function keys, i.e., shift, control, alt, caps lock, tab, insert, delete, home, end, page up, page down, and arrow keys
·Execute proper keyboarding techniques, i.e., eyes on copy, wrists low but not touching, feet on floor, fingers curved over homerow, good posture, forearms parallel to slant of ~the keyboard
·Evaluate speed and accuracy progress using current business and industry standards; specifically speed is to be measured based on net words per minute (20) gross words per minute with 1 errors.
·Use correct spelling in all prepared assignments
·Key sentences which require corrections to be made in capitalization
·Use proper spacing after all forms of punctuation
·Set and use margins and tabs to attractively format and organize information in a given space
·Center text horizontally and vertically.
·Utilize proofreader marks to edit documents

Required
·       Homework assignments--15 minutes of keyboarding each evening using online websites from Ms. Smith's web page.

Course Policies
·       Attendance will be taken each day at the beginning of class.  Good attendance is necessary in order to achieve success in this class.  See student handbook for allowable days absent per term.
·       Tardiness any student late for class without a pass will receive detention.  A student is tardy to class if he/she reports to class after the late bell.  All students are expected to report to class on time or to have a pass that explains the student's tardiness.  Chronic tardiness will not be tolerated.
·       Discipline all students are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly and courteous fashion.  A student should not talk when the teacher is conducting class.  If a student is talking, the student will be warned to stop, if student persists in talking, a detention will be given.  If the interruption continues, the parent will be called, and the student will be sent to the office.

·       Class Preparation: Bring your student agenda, a notebook and folder, and  pen/pencil to every class.
·       Homework—Homework is given as an aid in understanding concepts and skills presented in class. ~An assignment that is not finished in class automatically becomes homework. ~Homework will be checked and will be graded as check plus (95), check (80), or check minus (50). ~A zero will be given to an assignment that is not turned in on time.  All homework assignments collectively will count as one test grade per term.
·       Classroom rule, Be on time. Be prepared.  Be respectful and courteous and use appropriate language at all times.  Be responsible.
·       Extra help, After school--inform teacher during the day that you will be coming after school for help.
