The music program at the Jacobs School is designed to engender a love of music, respect for the art of music, knowledge of how music works and an ability to read and perform written music instrumentally and vocally. To that end kindergarteners learn songs and concepts through movement in groups and as individuals. First graders learn basic music concepts such as: fast, medium, slow, loud and quiet. High pitch and low pitch; how to follow the written words in music, how to sing rounds and more.
Second graders continue their music education through more complex songs and dances and the introduction of reading rhythmic notation.
The musical tasks of third graders are of increased complexity and involve multi-part singing, folk dances, and reading melodic notation as well as rhythmic notation.
By fourth grade students each have their own recorder on which to practice their leaning of music. Songs and dances are of increased challenge. Historical composers are also studied.  By fifth grade students are leaning about advanced music notation and about songwriting techniques as well as performing music of graduated difficulty both on instruments and vocally.
