Welcome to Mrs. Puclowski's Class

Welcome to Grade 1

Grade one is a very exciting place to be. While there are lots of things to do and learn in math, social studies, and science, the major emphasis in grade one is on language arts and emergent literacy. The grade one focus is on the development of composition, reading, and literature.

Students grow emotionally, socially, and intellectually as they continue to explore the world of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students engage in activities which foster excitement for language learning. Daily work includes the practice of reading behaviors; making connections between print and meaning, and symbols and sounds, and identifying and extending patterns found in written and spoken language.

Grade one emphasizes the need for students to construct meaning from and respond to oral communication and reading selections. Children are encouraged to express their ideas and opinions to others through speaking, emergent writing and drawings. This emphasis is applied to all other subject areas. The goal is to develop critical thinking skills to be applied to curriculum and an integrated learning experience.

Imagine-all of this and still time for fun in music, art, library, and physical education. No wonder that grade one is a very exciting place to be!
