Welcome!
My name is Mary Ellen Moran. I am a Reading Specialist at the Jacobs Elementary School. I teach Guided Reading daily to small groups of students reading text at their instructional reading level. Students will learn effective strategies for processing novel text at increasingly challenging levels of difficulty. The ultimate goal in guided reading is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies successfully. Our mission as reading specialistsis, is for all students to reach grade level benchmarks. We supplement classroom instruction and support struggling readers by teaching and modeling independent reading strategies. We strive to develop a love of reading in our students so they become life long readers.
The instruction for each group is customized to meet the needs of the students. The groups focus is a combination of phonics and reading strategy instruction. The daily instruction and repetition helps to build mastery. The students meet daily for approximately for 30 minutes. In addition to daily instruction it is critical that your child practice their reading at home. To make sure your child is matched with a "just right book" we will be sending home books matched specifically to your child's reading level. It is critical that students read books at their independent/instructional levels to grow as readers. When books are too difficult, students are not able to apply newly learned strategies to read text. Each night your child will be taking home a
"Take Home Book" in their reading bag. They are to bring it back the next day. We need the home-school reading partnership to be strong in order to grow your child as quickly as possible to reach grade level benchmarks.
All students in grades one and two participate in the home reading program called, Wonderful Exciting Books (W.E.B.). The students select "just right" home reading books from the WEB library cart. It is important for all students in grades one and two to read their WEB books to an adult at home. They should practice the books until they can read it fluently, (read like you talk).
Please view the links above.
The "Sight Words" link lists the words that children should know automatically for each grade level. Daily practice reading and writing these words quickly will help your child’s reading and writing progress. Start with just a few and increase gradually as they become mastered.
The "Parent Resources" link includes the following websites:
* Just Right Books – This site lists titles of books at your child’s reading level. If you don’t know his/her level ask me or look on the back of the books that are coming home.
* Free Rice – This site has vocabulary development games best suited for grades 2 – 5. This site also has other subject area games including math for grades 1-5.
* Starfall – This site has phonics games and text reading. Encourage your child to read on his/her own but if your child experiences difficulty, he/she can click on the tricky word and it sounds it out for him/her.
