Occupational Therapy with Mrs. Faherty : Grades 1-8

It is hard to believe that Friday is the 100th day of school.  I hope that everyone is healthy on this warm, winter day.
I am seeing some great progress in many of my students.  It takes a village to teach a child.  When teachers and parents work together to help children learn and grow, they grow so much faster.  Homework is extremely important.  It allows a child to practice what they learned at school. Here are some homework tips that might make things easier at home:
* Set up a quiet area for homework- No TV, radio or loud talking to distract
* Ban cellphones and computer time, unless used for homework, during homework time-texts, Youtube, and Facebook divide their attention
* Keep an area in your home stocked with all the tools and materials your child may need- Paper, glue sticks, stapler, rulers, erasers, pencils, ect.
* Stock your home with poster boards and triboards.  Students have a tendency to let you know at the last minute, that they have a project due.  You can get inexpensive boards at places like Ocean State Job Lot for a lot less than running to Staples.
* Allow your child to chew gum or crunchy snacks, because studies have shown that chewing can keep students more alert and focused.
* Set up a reward system where your child earns rewards for completing their work.
* Teach your child how to prioritize their work.
* Cue your child to pack up their homework as soon as their done.  They don't get rewarded till they have everything packed up for the next day.
* For longer projects, set up a wall calender, where you and your child can plug in dates for completing each step of a task. This will help your child learn to pace themselves and not try to do everything the day before a project is due.
Not all of the above ideas may help your children, but if they are having difficulty at home with homework, give some of them a try.  Please E mail me with any concerns related to the services I am providing for your child.
