Shared Reading
Shared reading is reading with children and involves the reading and rereading of enlarged print (book, poem, nursery rhyme, song) with a class or small group. Children of all reading abilities participate in the shared reading experience. A Big Book is used for the first reading of the story to the class. Repeated readings of the story are done with the Big Book as well as with small versions of the Big Book to allow the children to practice reading the story along with the teacher. The children will also read the small books with a partner or in a small group. Repeated readings of the story focus on understanding the meaning of print, concepts about print such as left to right & top to bottom progression of print on the page, story structure, and reading strategies & behaviors. After several practice
readings of the books, the children will take the small books home to share with their family and friends. As a result of the continued practice with these books, the children learn to read these "sight words".
