February Book Project: ~Biography Biography is a kind of nonfiction that deals with the history of someone's life. ~Autobiographies are written by a person about his or her own life; biographies are written by writers who research and read about their subjects in order to write about someone else's life. ~Biography contains realistic and believable dialogue and accurate factual information. The setting is authentic; the characters are real people; the problems in the story are believable; the story tells the importance of the person's life; the biography has a point of view or narrator; and it has a tone or style that is special in some way. ~Biographies teach you about other times, places,
and people.
This month's book project is to read a biography and complete ONE of the project choices listed below:
1. ~Write a letter to the author telling him or her what you thought about the book, or ask the author questions. ~For extra credit, if you can find the address and provided the author is still living, send the letter after you read it to the class. ~Use proper grammar and spelling!
2. ~Make a collage about your book and/or the person's life. ~Use magazine pictures, construction paper, fabric, or other materials on a 12x18 sheet of paper.
3. ~Make paper dolls complete with clothes the famous person would have worn.
Bring your completed project to school on February 28, 2012. ~You will be telling the class about your famous person and showing us your project.
December Book Project
“Read to the Class”
One of my favorite opportunities as a teacher is to read some of my beloved picture books to the students. It is so exciting to see the students connect to my “performance” as I read the books to them with expression, varied voices and move around the room. For the month of December, I want to give the students the opportunity to read their favorite story to the students or perhaps discover a new one that they believe the students will enjoy having read to them.
Assignment:
· choose a 32 page picture book · bring the book in for approval (we do not want any repeat titles) · choose three words from the story to share as vocabulary before the reading – they should be prepared to share the definitions of each word · have a discussion question prepared for the students to discuss the story after it has been read to them ·
when reading the book I will be looking for the students to be: § reading “loudly and proudly” § reading with expression § reading at a proper pace § sharing pictures with the class
We will begin reading the week of December 12.
NOVEMBER BOOK PROJECT
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Find a realistic fiction book that is a "Just Right" book for you. Realistic fiction consists of stories that take place in modern times. A realistic story has not actually happened. It only seems real. The main character in a realistic fiction story may remind you of someone you know. The characters are involved in events that could happen. The problem may also sound very believable. Ideas in a realistic fiction stories come from a writer's own experiences or interests, but the finished products are more fiction that fact.
After you have read the book, you will be making a book jacket for that book and presenting it to the class. Here's how to create a book jacket for your book:
1. Take a 9" x 18" sheet of construction paper and fold it like a book jacket. (I will provide the paper already folded for you) 2. On the front cover write the title, author's name, and a colorful illustration of the book. 3. On the back cover, write a summary of the events in the book. Write your own name in the bottom right-hand corner. 4. On the inside front flap, write a detailed description of the main character of the book. 5. On the inside back flap, write down the reasons why you liked the book. Try to sell others on reading the book.
