Glory Days

Fans' support needed to recreate Pirates' 'glory days'

Submitted by James Quatromoni

Hull High Athletic Director

On Oct. 5, Hull High School hosted Martha’s Vineyard in a non-league high school football game. The event was to be an exciting celebration of the hard work and commitment of more than 60 young men that put on the blue and gold each Friday or Saturday.

Then NBC came in. The Sunday Night Football feature crew was scheduled to come to town with cameras in tow. Instantly, that night became just as much a celebration of our community. It became a celebration of how we truly support our young people.

Planning an event that may have over 1,500 spectators is a large task. Countless staff members and volunteers helped make the day as special as it was. More importantly, approximately 1,500 spectators arrived. There were old and young, regulars and newcomers, face-painters and Pirates in costume – it was a memorable scene.

I had the opportunity to talk to so many people that night. The energy and passion in the air for our town and our team was impressive.

I was particularly interested in the alumni presence. Hull High Graduates of all ages enjoyed the exciting night. Many alumni commented on the “glory days” of the ’70s. “In those days, this place was packed like this every night,” they explained. The stories were presented with a memory of pride. Belonging to that crowd or the team that they supported provided an equal level of pride. Fans and players alike became part of something special.

I imagine it was powerful fuel for the idea of “Pirate Pride,” a concept ingrained in me during my time at the high school in the late ’80s.

The most important step that a community can take in supporting its young people’s hard work and commitment – is support.

Support validates these efforts. Support is uplifting. Support is what motivates second-graders to aspire to reach levels of ability worthy of a high school varsity team. Support of your family, friends and community members is what makes the high school athletic experience a lifelong memory. Your support is truly a gift to these young people.

To a man, each of the Pirates who participated in that October game against the Vineyard commented on the crowd. They commented on just how energizing it was to perform for that crowd. In the weeks that have followed, some are realizing how the energy from that crowd continues to motivate them even today.

If you attended that game, think for a moment about the experience. Think about how much fun you had. If you did not attend, let me tell you that you missed a memorable football game played on an almost perfect night.

We have three home football games remaining. Consider making high school athletics part of your entertainment choices. I know that there are many.

This choice, though, can provide an enjoyable evening and more. You can provide invaluable support to the young people in our community. They know, and notice, when you are there. You participate in creating an energetic atmosphere. You invest in our young people as future candidates look on from the crowd, realizing the respect that varsity athletes receive.

And lastly, you bring us one step closer to recreating those “glory days” that alumni of any high school can remember and appreciate.

As time passes, supporters and participants are able to equally share in the pride generated from their commitments. We appreciate your support.

Go Pirates!
