STUDENT COURSE EXPECTATIONS

Wellness 10 Mr. McGrath 3 CREDITS
Course Overview: Wellness is a required course for all grades for students at Hull High School.
This co-ed program consists of team and individual sports, lifetime and fitness activities, as well as important health topics.
Course Objectives:
· Students will take part in a health and fitness program
· Students will practice and develop basic skills, team play, and strategy
· Student will exhibit mature behavior and sportsmanship
· Will understand and apply wellness skills
· Will write effectively for a variety of purposes
Course Content: Students will practice sportsmanship and team work, as well as individual skills. Students will exhibit knowledge of fitness programs and the importance of lifelong fitness.
· Activities will include units on team sports, recreational games, lifetime activities, and fitness
· Health topics will include, but may not be limited to:
Nutrition: Healthy eating, portions, food choices
Drugs and Alcohol: Causes and Effects, Addiction, Categories of Drugs
Sex Education: Reproductive Functions, STIs, Pregnancy, Sexuality
Self-Esteem: Peer Pressure, Self-Image, Family Dynamics, Relationships
Sun Damage: Melanoma, Tanning, Safe Sun Care
Required Writing:
· Written Health Assignments/ Presentations
· Fitness Training Journal
· Written Midterm/Final
Course Evaluation Criteria:
· Class Participation and Effort 60%
· Health Assignments/Fitness Journals 20%
· Midterm Exam 10%
· Final Exam 10%
Class Participation and effort: Students will receive a grade for each Physical education class, a rubric from 5-0.
5: Student has changed and participated to the best of their ability for the entire class while displaying sportsmanship and behaving appropriately.
4: Student has changed and participated for the entire class while showing sportsmanship and behaving appropriately.
3: Student has changed and participated for the majority of the class while displaying sportsmanship and behaving appropriately.
2: Student has changed and participated in class while behaving appropriately.
1: Student has changed and behaving appropriately.
0: Student has not changed or behaved appropriately.
Course Policies:
· Students must wear sneakers and athletic clothing to participate in class
· Students must be punctual and check in with their teacher
· Students are responsible for displaying proper sportsmanship and behaving appropriately
· Students must bring a pencil and a binder to each health class
· Students need to make up absences after school ( absent = 0)
