Course # 554 Honors French 5

Text: A Bord, Chapters 15-16, (Glencoe-McGraw Hill, 1998)

Course Overview:  This course focuses on total proficiency in speaking and writing
and on the study of French classics.  Students will be expected to sustain impromptu
conversation on a wide range of topics.  They will be expected to use the most complex
grammmatical structures and vocabulary.  Prerequisite: a B+ or better in French 4.

Course Objectives
*  Sudents will further develop and use the four language skills in French
*  Students will gain knowledge and an appreciation of other cultures
*  Students will compare their culture and language with others
*  Students will connect French with other subject areas
*  Students will use French in Hull and in other communities in the world

Course Content:
*  Vocabulary: travel, the media, time and money, ecological terms, reporting the news,
values, health, fine arts, banking terms

*  Grammar:  subjunctive vs. infinitive, the futur anterieur, depuis, the passe simple, the plus-que-parfait, possessive pronouns, the past conditionel

* L'etranger, Albert Camus
* En attendant Godot, Samuel Beckett
* Les Mouches, Jean-Paul Sartre

All students in World Languages write in the target language on a regular basis.  The compositions are based on the grammar and vocabulary they are studying.  French 5 students write weekly and , and in addition, do several long papers during the year.  All work is scored by the Hull High School writing rubric.

*  Course Evaluation Criteria:  tests = 40%, quizzes = 20% , homework = 20%
 classroom participation = 20%

   *  Come prepared for class with a notebook, book, writing utensil
   *  Homework given nightly
