Welcome to Spanish One and Two with Mr. Eaton
Spanish I and II Syllabi
Señor Eaton
Room B122
After school hours everyday except Friday
Content and Objectives
Being the second most spoken language in the world, a working knowledge of Spanish is very useful in a global world that technology is continually shrinking. Even without traveling to Spanishspeaking countries, Spanish students can make meaningful connections with Spanish speakers wherever they may study, work, or live in the future.
Our Spanish I class will begin the year with basic greetings, numbers, time, and weather. You will learn how to form basic sentences that will enable you to ask and answer questions verbally and in writing. We will be working exclusively with the present tense while encountering chapters in the text Asi Se Dice about description, classes, food, sports, family, and household items. An emphasis on reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish will be applied when acquiring vocabulary, grammar, and insights into Latin American cultures.
Our Spanish II class will begin the year with a review of Spanish I and a test on that material. It is essential to understand Spanish I because the concepts are used as a foundation that is built upon in Spanish II. Using the text Asi Se Dice we will explore chapters about health/illness, vacations, activities, shopping, and airport travel as we use the present, present progressive, and past tenses. An emphasis on reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish will be applied when acquiring vocabulary, grammar, and insights into Latin
American cultures.
General Preparation and Class Guidelines
By now, you should all have received adequate instruction on how to conduct yourselves in a classroom setting. Just in case, here is a quick run through of some, but not all of my basic classexpectations. In short, if you can demonstrate a good in-class attitude towards myself and your classmates and a strong work ethic on homework, quizzes, tests, projects, participation, you will do fine in my class.
1. Arrive in a timely fashion, prepared and ready to learn as three tardies equals a detention
2. Listen to the teacher and students; I will use "uno, dos, tres, silencio" to get your attention
3. Follow directions
4. Bring pens, three-ring binders with paper or notebooks to class every day, be organized
5. I strongly encourage you to ask questions, or request that something be repeated or clarified if you don't understand
Attendance
As stated in Hull's handbook, students with nine or more excused absences per semester cannot receive credit for coursework. Success is showing up and trying hard.
Misbehavior
1. I expect rules to be forgotten occasionally.
2. I will routinely remind you of these rules in a civil manner and have discussions with the students who violate these basic codes of conduct that promote a safe and productive learning atmosphere for all students.
3. Hopefully, such infractions can be corrected by student-teacher discussions and detentions without the involvement of parents and the administration.
Electronics usage
1. Cell phones must be placed FACE DOWN on the left hand corner of your desk at all times; if you touch your phone you will get a detention and have your phone confiscated.
2. You may use your phone the last three minutes of class ONLY to write down homework or other essential info. Technology is useful only when used prudently.
3. IPODS or other devices are prohibited at all times as they distract you from hearing me. Visible IPODS or earphones will result in confiscation and a detention.
Assignments
1. All homework will be written on the back board of the classroom and posted on my website
2. On certain days, homework will be collected, carefully corrected and returned to you as
soon as possible to help you improve your Spanish skills
3. Late homework, assignments, or projects will be marked down a full letter grade. You
have seven days from the day you missed class to make up any missing assignments or they will become permanent zeros. This seven day rule also applies for redoing homework or retaking assessments.
4. Two missed homework assignments a quarter will not be counted against you. I will drop
your lowest quiz grade.
5. If you miss a class or cannot remember the homework please check my website by accessingit through the staff pages.
