Part 2- Grammar –
*Parts of speech recognition – nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns,
conjunctions, prepositions, articles
*Subject / Verb Agreement – remember singular and plural match ups
Examples:
Tom (walk, walks) his dog. Answer - walks
The beaker of liquids (pour, pours) easily. Answer- pours because beaker is the subject while liquids is part of a prepositional phrase.
*Pronoun / Antecedent Agreement- remember singular and plural match ups as well as masculine and feminine match ups.
Examples:
Everyone brought (his, their) bikes. Answer - his
The boys ran (his, their) best. Answer – their
*Fragment and run-ons – Remember a complete sentence only needs a subject and verb
Examples: He moved (Complete sentence)
Sara and John of Hull (Fragment – missing verb)
I ran he walked (run-on – should be two sentences)
*Verbals – Infinitives, Participles, Gerunds
Part 3 – Literary Devices – Look at the list I gave to you in class
Example: His heart melted like butter. (Simile)

***I will hand out a review sheet for the final a week in advance. The final will be broken down into grammar, vocabulary, writing, and literature from the mid-year on. The final will not cover material from the first half of the year, but does build off of the literary devices, parts of speech, and writing done previous to the mid-year exam.

May 19 – begin reading chapter 4 in class, finish reading for homework
May 20- reading check on chapter 4, need to have theme book outline done through chapter 4
May 21- begin reading chapter 5, finish chapter 5 reading over the weekend
May 24- vocab. Lesson 15 quiz, begin reading chapter 6 and finish chapter 6 reading for homework
May 25 –reading check for chapters 5 and 6, have theme book sheet done up through chapter 6 by Wednesday the 26th
May 26 – You should start working on constructing your theme book that is due June 1
Begin reading chapter 7 in class, finish reading chapter 7 for homework

Writing Assignment – Assigned 4/5 -Due Date: 4/8 (Thursday)
After reading Romiette and Julio you should realize that one of the issues concerning the main characters is hate based on race. The couple shares an interracial relationship that spawns hate from the Devildogs gang. This week you will find an article either in the paper, online, etc. that focuses on a specific hate crime in society today.
- Find an article printed within the last five years.
- The article must focus on a hate crime that was committed over race, gender, sexual orientation, age, etc.
- This article must be attached to your written piece in order to attain credit.
- Answer the following questions. MINIMUM - 1 page typed or 1 pages written
How is the hate crime you chose related to the crimes committed in Romiette and Julio?
Why do you think such horrible crimes transpired (took place)?
Would there be any way to prevent these crimes from happening in the future? Explain.
What differences do you see between the crimes committed in the fictitious book and the real life situation that you discovered?

Chapters 21 – 27
1. When the Devildogs approach Romiette and Julio in the lunch room, the two get up on the tables and start dancing. Do you think this is an effective way of dealing with the gang? Why or why not? Explain.
2. In chapter 25 Romi experiences the nightmare again. This time she figured out that the voice she hears is Julio’s. Destiny is convinces Romiette will figure out what it means. What are your predictions about what the dream could mean?
3. Where else do you see examples in the text that support the theme of DESTINY? What did you notice and how does the example or how do the examples support the theme of destiny?
Chapters 28-33
1. What does Ben mean when he says (pg. 103) “[The Devildogs have no poetry – no individuality? They are just part of a large dirty organism, like that alien monster thing in that Star Trek movie – unthinking, but very, very dangerous”?
2. In chapter 29 Romiette talks with Malaka again. Were you correct about your predictions about this girl? How do you feel about Malaka’s character?
3. In chapter 32, Julio and his father get in an argument about Romiette. What points does each of them raise? Do both or either of them have good points? Explain.

3. Where have you heard about gang violence? Think about the newspaper, internet, news, etc.
4. Find an article discussing real life gang violence and quickly summarize what took place. What is your response to this article?
